After the Medieval period came the start of Tudor times in AD 1485, and
the return to classical art during the Renaissance. It also saw turbulent
times, including the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. This resulted
in the breaking away from Rome and the Catholic faith, and the start of
the Church of England. Unfortunately at this time many ancient artefacts
and ecclesiastical items and manuscripts, were destroyed having previously
been held by the monasteries. However, classical Renaissance art had begun
in England and Europe, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful art styles
and forms.

T-101.
Italian Bronze Statuette of Neptune circa 16th Century.
A very finely sculptured bronze statuette standing just under
4 inches tall including its base which is also of bronze. The
item would have been made in Northern Italy, most likely Florence,
in the mid to late 16th century, probably around c.1580 AD. The
bronze figure depicts the Roman God Neptune, [Poseidon to the
Ancient Greeks], king of the seas, in dramatic powerful pose with
crown aloft and laurel wreath in hair. This wonderful small baroque
period bronze statuette would have been produced in the fine traditional
"lost wax" fashion, and is made in one piece. Exceptional detail
is still visible on this miniature work of art which would have
been hand crafted by a very skilful sculpture of the late Italian
16th century period.
