Misc-102.
Byzantine Crucifix circa 8th Century AD. A wonderful
bronze cross from the Byzantine period, a Greek colony founded in
the 7th century AD. The crucifix depicts the body of Christ and shows
good detail with signs of wear and worship over the centuries. These
items were produced during this period to satisfy the need of Christianity
which was rapidly spreading across post Roman Europe. The Roman Emperor
Constantine was the first Christian Holy Roman Emperor who settled
away from Rome and founded Constantinople which was named after him.
This became Byzantium, and is now modern day Istanbul Turkey. This
ancient crucifix has been restrung for modern day wear or display
purposes.
